With AIR OPTIX plus HydraGlyde, the manufacturer Alcon has succeeded in creating a monthly contact lens that remains comfortable and fresh for the entire month, right up to the last day. The silicone hydrogel contact lens features SmartShield technology and HydraGlyde Moisture Matrix which provide unprecedented resistance to deposits and optimal hydration. SmartShield coats the contact lens with an ultra-thin film to protect it from annoying deposits. The HydraGlyde Moisture Matrix ensures outstanding moisture retention capabilities from the very first to the very last day.
Deposits on contact lenses not only reduce wearing comfort, but also impair vision and increase the risk of infection. With AIR OPTIX plus HydraGlyde, deposits are virtually eliminated thanks to SmartShield technology. The ultra-thin layer displays a particularly high resistance to lipids. These are oily substances present in tear fluid as well as in moisturising soaps, hand creams and make-up. SmartShield technology makes it virtually impossible for these substances to adhere. As a result, contact lenses retain the comfort of day one right up until the last day of use.
With AIR OPTIX plus HydraGlyde, the manufacturer has succeeded in developing a surface-active polymer that is responsible for the excellent hydration properties of the Hydraglyde Moisture Matrix. Dry spots on contact lenses are now a problem of the past. The polymer consists of two components. One of these is polyoxyethylene: it is particularly hydrophilic and draws in moisture. The other is polyoxybutylene: this component is especially attracted to silicone and docks onto the contact lens. This creates a long-lasting, smooth moisture film which stably envelops the contact lens. OptiFree PureMoist or AO Sept plus HydraGlyde is recommended to maintain a continuous moisture layer.
As eyes are optimally supplied with oxygen, the wearer can take advantage of the immense wearing comfort late into the night without any concerns. In theory, it is even possible to wear the AIR OPTIX plus HydraGlyde contact lenses for seven days and six consecutive nights. This is however, only recommended after consulting an optician or ophthalmologist.
